Summit’s Tree Permit: Every Private Tree Now Needs One
Summit changed its tree rules recently, and a lot of homeowners (and even some tree companies) are still working off the old numbers. The city repealed and replaced its tree ordinance (Chapter 29) in June 2024.
- Since the June 2024 rewrite, a permit is required to remove any private tree (the ordinance sets no minimum diameter), except emergency removal of a dead, diseased or hazardous tree certified by a Licensed Tree Expert, which still needs an application filed within five business days, with photos and the stump left in place. Removing a living tree of 12 inches DBH or more additionally triggers replacement, planted within 12 months, then guaranteed and inspected for two years, and replanted if it fails.
- Applications go to the Department of Community Services, which decides within 15 business days of a complete application, extendable by a further 10.
- An approved permit runs 12 months at most, and lapses sooner if the work isn’t completed in a reasonable time; after that it’s a new application and new fees.
We keep up with this so you don’t get caught out. We’ll measure your tree, tell you whether replacement will be triggered at 12 inches, and explain what the city’s inspection will look for, before any cutting. Filing the application is on you; we don’t file permits. But you’ll have the current rules, not last year’s. For storm-damaged or hazardous trees, we document the condition for the city and your insurer.
