Licensed Tree Service in Westfield, NJ

Taking a tree apart over a roof is the job that tests a company's insurance. Wayne's carries general liability and workers' compensation, is registered as NJTC No. 806860, and employs Peter Ahlert under operator license LTCO No. 565. Dylan Ahlert owns and runs it.

Westfield is big canopy on small backyards — mature trees planted a century ago over houses built close together. That combination is why nearly every removal here happens on ropes, over the roof, in pieces. It is slower and it costs more in labor, and it is the only way to do it without damage.

02 Our Services

Our Residential and Commercial Tree Services in Westfield, NJ

Westfield’s iconic streetscape depends on professional tree management.

The town’s aging Norway maple population — widely planted mid-century — is now in structural decline, requiring systematic removal and replacement. Heritage oaks in Wychwood, Indian Forest, and Brightwood neighborhoods demand expert pruning to maintain health and manage risk.

Superstorm Sandy (2012) demonstrated Westfield’s vulnerability: hundreds of large trees fell, crushing cars and blocking streets for days. Our services include crane-assisted removal on tight residential lots, preventive crown reduction, dead-ash removal from the Emerald Ash Borer infestation, and rapid emergency storm response across all Westfield neighborhoods.

Tree Removal Service

Tree Removal

We take trees down in sections rather than felling them whole. It is slower and it costs more in labor, and it is the only way to remove a tree standing over a roof, a fence or a driveway without something getting broken.

Tree Trimming & Pruning

Structural pruning on a young tree is the cheapest work you will ever have done. Correcting a competing leader at ten years costs a fraction of removing the failed half of that tree at thirty.

How we prune
Stump Grinding and Removal

Stump Grinding & Removal

The grindings do not have to leave. Mixed with soil they backfill the hole and settle in over a season, or we haul the lot away and leave you clean ground — whichever suits what you are doing next.

Tree & Shrub Planting service

Tree & Shrub Planting

A tree in the right place pays you back — shade on the west side of a house measurably cuts summer cooling, and a screen planting does more for privacy than a fence at half the height.

Land Clearing Service

Land Clearing

Bare ground moves. Where we clear on any kind of slope we think about what the rain will do to it, because the erosion problem is more expensive to fix than the clearing was.

Storm Cleanup

24/7 Emergency Tree Service

Making a site safe and clearing it fully are two different jobs. At two in the morning the first is what matters, and we would rather stabilize it properly and come back in daylight than rush the rest.

03 Local Rules

Westfield's Threshold Is 8 Inches — Its Website Still Says 16

This is the discrepancy to know about in Westfield. The Tree Preservation Ordinance was amended in May 2024 and now requires a permit wherever a tree is over 8 inches DBH, full stop, with no construction needed to trigger it. The Town's own permit page still describes the older rule — two or more trees over six months, or a single tree over 16 inches. The code is the operative law and it is the more recent text, so plan around eight inches.

For a straightforward homeowner removal with no subdivision or site plan the fee is $50; where development, demolition or a Town tree is involved it is $500. Dead, dying, diseased and dangerous trees are exempt, but that exemption is not self-declaring — it needs certification from the Code Enforcement Officer or a New Jersey licensed tree expert. There are also useful automatic allowances: all trees within 15 feet of a proposed building, septic field or pool, and within 5 feet of a driveway, walk or patio.

  • Permit required for any tree over 8 inches DBH — the Town website's 16 inches is out of date
  • Fee: $50 for an ordinary homeowner removal, $500 where development or a Town tree is involved
  • Dead and dangerous trees are exempt, but need certification — not self-declared
  • Automatic allowance: trees within 15 ft of a building, septic field or pool
  • A hazardous-tree application must be decided within 10 days
  • Administered by the Code Enforcement Officer; Public Works Forestry, 908-789-4040
