City work brings sidewalks, parked cars and neighbors into every job, which is why our cover is not optional. Wayne's carries general liability and workers' compensation, holds registration NJTC No. 806860, and employs Peter Ahlert under operator license LTCO No. 565. Dylan Ahlert owns it.
Plainfield has some of the largest street trees in the county standing over Victorian houses on city lots. There is nowhere to drop anything, so every removal is rope and rigging work, and a lot of what we do here is taking dead wood out over sidewalks, porches and parked cars before it comes down on its own.

Tree Removal
A dead or dying tree does not fail predictably. Decay hollows the trunk from the inside while the outside still looks solid, so the tree stands until the day it does not. If yours has bare limbs in summer, bark falling away, or fungus at the base, it is on the clock.
Timing matters more than people expect. Most species take pruning best while dormant, when the wounds close cleanly and you are not inviting pests to a fresh cut in the middle of summer.
The grindings do not have to leave. Mixed with soil they backfill the hole and settle in over a season, or we haul the lot away and leave you clean ground — whichever suits what you are doing next.
A new tree needs watering through its first two summers, not its first two weeks. Most replacements we are called out to look at did not die of disease — they died of a dry August in year two.
Fence lines and paddock edges are the jobs that get put off. Once the brush is into the wire it stops being a landscaping task and starts being fence repair.
A tree on a house has to be lifted off, not cut off. Cutting away the wrong piece first lets the rest drop, and the second impact is usually worse than the first. That is what the crane is for.
Plainfield Added Tree Rules in 2024, With Fees That Scale by Size
Plainfield adopted its shade tree removal and replacement section in April 2024 and amended it that July. Any non-street tree of 6 inches DBH or more needs an application to the Zoning Officer, with a tree survey attached, and nothing comes down until the City has approved it. Street trees now have no minimum size at all — the 2.5 inch floor was removed by the July amendment.
Fees rise with the tree: $75 up to 13 inches, $100 to 23 inches, $150 to 33 inches and $175 above that. Replacement runs one to four trees at a minimum 1.5 inch caliper, planted within twelve months and monitored for two. Hazard trees carry no fee and no replacement, but you need written justification and a statement from a licensed tree expert to claim it.
