South Plainfield’s Rules Came in With the 2024 Stormwater Ordinance
South Plainfield replaced a 1992 chapter with the current one in May 2024, written to the state stormwater model. A tree removal application goes to the Construction Official for any non-street tree of 6 inches DBH or more, or any street tree from 2.5 inches, and no tree is to come down until the Borough has approved it.
For an existing home the fee is $25; vacant land, commercial property and anything with a subdivision or site plan pays $100 an acre. Replacement runs one to four trees at a minimum 1.5 inch caliper, planted within twelve months and monitored for two years. Hazard trees come out with no fee and no replacement, with written justification: photographs, or a statement from a licensed tree expert.

- Fee: $25 for an existing home with no subdivision or site plan; otherwise $100 per acre or part acre
- Hazard trees: no fee and no replacement, with written justification
- Replacement: 1 to 4 trees at 1.5 inch caliper (residents exempt except street trees), monitored two years, replaced if they die
- If the Borough finds replanting impossible: plant off site, or pay twice a nursery estimate the Borough accepts
