Watchung’s Tree Removal Permit: What to Know First
Watchung requires a permit before cutting, removing, topping, injuring or damaging any regulated tree, including a single tree. Routine trimming and pruning are exempt unless the work would destroy the tree, as are commercial nurseries and orchards, utility right-of-way work, and removals ordered by the borough, county or state. A regulated tree is any species 4 inches or more in diameter measured 4.5 feet up, or 2 inches for dogwood, birch and American hornbeam. Land disturbance does not decide whether you need a permit; it only decides which checklist you file.
Storm-damaged and hazard trees still need a permit (it is free, issued on your certification of the tree’s condition), so we document what we find for the borough and your insurer; if the Borough Engineer disagrees, you would have to hire a certified tree expert to report on the tree. We’ll walk your property and tell you plainly whether your job is likely to need the borough’s permit before any work starts. Filing the application is on you or your engineer (we don’t file permits), but you’ll know where you stand instead of getting stopped mid-project. For storm-damaged or clearly hazardous trees, we document the condition for both the borough and your insurance claim.
