Bedminster’s Tree Removal Rules: When You Actually Need a Permit
Bedminster does not work off a simple size limit the way most towns do. Under Chapter 12 of the Township Code, an ordinary single-family homeowner can take down up to 10 trees a year, as long as that is also under 10% of the trees on the lot, with no permit at all.
What pulls you back into the permit is position, not size. A tree 5 inches across or more within 10 feet of a property line counts if a neighboring house sits within 150 feet, and so does any work in a Township right-of-way, on slopes of 25% or steeper, within 100 feet of a ridge line, or in a mapped habitat area. Dead and diseased trees are exempt outright.

- Regulated size: 5 inches across, measured 4.5 feet up; any size in a Township right-of-way
- Always needs a permit: a regulated tree within 10 ft of a property line where a home is within 150 ft
- Exempt: dead or diseased trees, and nuisance species such as Ailanthus unless within 100 ft of a street
- Fee: $100 nonrefundable, plus an inspection escrow posted before work starts
- Administered by the Township Engineer, through Code Enforcement
