Most of our work here is preservation: careful structural pruning, dead and crossing wood taken out, the natural form of the tree left alone. When something genuinely has to come down we plan it as crane work so nothing swings into a wall or a hedge.
If a tree is a known hazard and it falls on your neighbor's property, that is generally your problem, not theirs. A written assessment before anything happens is worth having, and it is part of what we give you with the quote.

Grinding the stump is not the same as grinding the roots. On a big tree the surface roots run a long way, and if you plan to build or pave over the area we deal with those too rather than leave them to rot and subside.

Clearing for a build is about what stays as much as what goes. Mature trees you keep have to be protected from the machinery, or you will lose them two years later to root compaction and not know why.

More on storm responseFar Hills runs a count-based rule rather than a flat size limit. Under Ordinance 2021-13 a single-family homeowner can remove up to 10 trees in a year — provided that is also under 10% of the trees on the property — without a permit.
Past that you need one, and you always need one for a tree 6 inches across or more within 10 feet of a property line where a home sits within 150 feet, on slopes of 25% or steeper, or in a mapped habitat area. Dogwood, ironwood and American hornbeam are protected from just 2.5 inches. There is also a genuinely useful exemption for the critical footprint — the building footprint, the septic field plus 30 feet, and the driveway plus 10 feet either side.
