First, a regulated tree starts at over 5 inches across rather than the usual six, and dogwood, ironwood and American hornbeam are protected from just 2.5 inches. Second, and unusually, the exemption list contains no general allowance for dead, diseased or dangerous trees.
That second point is the one to know. In most of our towns a hazard tree comes out with no permit and no replacement; in Warren the exemptions cover nurseries, orchards, farm woodlots, utility rights-of-way and sight easements, but not hazard trees as a category. The permit is $25 per lot through the Zoning Office. There is also a hard limit worth checking on hillside lots: removal is prohibited on slopes of 15% or steeper where the Township Engineer finds it would worsen run-off.
