Bound Brook Wants the Application Before the Tree Comes Down
Under Section 27-1.2 of the Borough Code a tree removal application goes to the Shade Tree Commission and the Department of Public Works, and no tree is to be removed until the Borough has reviewed and approved it. The fee for a non-shade tree is $10. Street trees are regulated from 2.5 inches DBH.
One honest caveat, and it is the reason we call the Borough before quoting rather than guessing: the sentence that sets the size threshold for trees on private property is missing its number in the adopted text, and the section is headed “optional” while its body says a permit shall be obtained. We confirm your specific tree with Code Enforcement instead of assuming. Hazard trees (dead, dying, diseased or infested) are exempt with written justification.
- Apply first: non-shade trees go to Code Enforcement and the DPW Director, shade trees to the Shade Tree Commission
- Fee: $10 for a non-shade tree
- Street trees regulated from 2.5 inches DBH
- Replacement: 1 to 4 trees by size, planted within 12 months and monitored two years; $500 per tree only if the Borough rules out on-site planting
- Residents removing fewer than four trees an acre under 33 inches DBH in a rolling five years are exempt from replacement; justify it in writing to DPW
